Video and computer games are a realm of great potential for digital history. However, as we discussed in class, game developers and designers have to make decisions about narrative and playability that might not necessarily line up with a historian’s educational goals. For this assignment, you’ll write a blog post talking about the possibility of games and history.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For this blog post, you’ll review a historical video game of your choice to answer some questions. The game you choose to review should be set in a historical time period and based on\/inspired by historical events, environments and\/or people. Your game does not need to be 100% educational. Games like Age of Empires, Civilization, Assassin’s Creed and God of War are all suitable for this assignment. However, try to avoid alternate history games like Bioshock, which have entirely fictional settings. If you aren’t sure if a video game you have played qualifies, check this list of historical video games<\/a> or check with me to make sure!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If you aren’t someone who plays video games or don’t remember a historical video game well enough to review it, play either The Oregon Trail<\/strong> available here on The Internet Archive<\/a> or When Rivers Were Trails<\/strong> available here on Itch.io<\/a> (the game is free to play but will require you to download it) and review it for this assignment. You are also welcome to keep playing A Sailor’s Life for Me<\/strong> from class (here is the link to that again<\/a>), but be sure to play through the whole game in order to review it properly!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In your blog post, answer the following questions by drawing on your chosen game(s) for examples:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

  1. What game did you or have you played? Make sure to include the name of the game and describe the historical setting in your post.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  2. How can games help us understand history better? How does your game educate players about the past?<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  3. How can games distort our views of history? How does your game present the past in ways that might misinform or mislead players?<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  4. In your opinion, are video games a useful format for the study and presentation of history?<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n

    Your blog post should be 2-3 paragraphs long and include detailed examples from your chosen video game to support your arguments.
